Simon Rogan at Claridge’s
After months of speculation the news has finally dropped; little produce trucks from Cumbria will now regularly be making their merry way to London with chef Simon Rogan aboard, ready to bring his home-grown take on British food to the historical kitchens of Claridge’s.
With two Michelin starred restaurant L’Enclume and several other successful ventures already under his belt, Rogan’s 10-year contract will begin in Spring 2014, taking over from chef Gordon Ramsey after an impressive 12-year run that ended tumultuously to say the least. But all of that is in the past as Rogan brings with him promises of a new start for the legendary hotel’s restaurant, leaving behind kitchen nightmares for fresh pastures full of local British produce.
Rogan vows to keep the style of L’Enclume’s food, giving Londoners the chance to savour the cuisine that won the establishment the title of Best Restaurant in the UK by the Good Food Guide in the 2014 edition, while embracing the hotel’s timeless appeal and taste for the lavish by breaking his British-only ingredients rule. A man’s got to be willing to splurge for that fancy French truffle and Iranian caviar once in a while. A complete renovation of the space is also in talks, full of open spaces and an assured larger bar area.
The chef has likened this new partnership to getting the chance to score the winning goal for his country at the World Cup Final; let us only hope that Rogan will prove more successful at his venture than England’s team has been in the past few years.
